To find out if a test sample contains asbestos fibres we utilize a polarized light microscope with phase contrast (PLM). In our work we follow national and international method descriptions. In preparing the sample we use special imbedding fluids with a defined refractive index for each type of asbestos. In a microscope examination of the sample we determine the properties and appearance of a fibre, and from this the occurrence of asbestos can be determined.
If you suspect that an asbestos contamination has occured, for instance during an asbestos removal, or in other ways have contaminated materials, an analysis can be performed following Safe Controls technical instruction; "asbestos contamination". Dust and air samples are analysed using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Airborne asbestos fibres are extremely thin but by using a SEM the image can be enlarged several thousand times. |

Asbestos is a collective name for a group of minerals common in nature. The minerals have different chemical compositions and properties. The dominating type of asbestos is Chrysotile, making up 99% of all asbestos. The range of applications for asbestos has been large due to its valuable technical properties, such as its high strength, flexibility, heat resistance and its good isolative properties of both sound and heat. According to the Swedish work Environment Authority (Arbetsmiljöverket) asbestos has been used in about 3000 products.
Asbestos is very hazardous to one´s health, and can be a cause of several diseases. Occupational groups with lengthy and high exposure to asbestos can in a worst case scenario develop tumors and lung cancer. It can take a long time, upwards of 30 years, before one is starting to show symptoms after exposure. The regulations for removal and taking care of asbestos during demolition and reconstruction are extensive. The people in charge of and performing the asbestos removal must have attended special education and must have received a permit from the Swedish Work Environment Authority for each projekt.
